The rapid prototype process is the automatic construction of physical objects, using solid freeform fabrication.  This technique first allows us at Prototype & Short-Run Services to produce sheet metal prototype models and prototype parts.  We can then apply it even more broadly, to manufacture production-quality parts in smaller numbers.  The process of rapid prototype uses a three-dimensional virtual drawing, as from a CAD file, to automate the fabrication of a sheet metal prototype model.  This physical model can reveal more complete information about a product, and it comes earlier in the development cycle.  Whether you're interested in a complete prototype model, or a prototype part, we can meet your needs.

Quality Control

Video comparators help us perform close-tolerance inspection. In fact, we’re able to check dimensions down to five decimal places. The CNC technology we use helps us form intricate, delicate parts, some with thicknesses as small as 0.0008". We also offer SPC, which is available upon request.

Our Equipment

To make precise prototypes, we use state-of-the-art Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology. We use presses, mills, lathes, grinders, welders and other machinery to precisely replicate our customers’ complex designs. We load CAD models into our CNC computers, and the computers tell our machines what to do. This method eliminates inconsistency and dramatically reduces human error.

History of Prototyping

Humans have been creating prototyping since the very first stone tools. Prototyping with CNC machining began in the late 1960s. Herbert Voelcker, an engineering professor, was the first to experiment with computer-controlled machine tools. Throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s, prototyping with CNC machining evolved to become the efficient, precise and reliable process that it is today.
